How It Started
It began with a simple belief — that home-cooked food has the power to bring people together in ways nothing else can.
For our founder, that belief was shaped by a humble bowl of Ah Ma’s handmade mee hoon kueh. It was never just a dish. With cabbage, prawns, and pieces of dough torn gently by hand, it was a meal that only appeared when the whole family gathered around the table. The kitchen would be warm, the conversations lively, and the house filled with laughter. But when Ah Ma stopped cooking, something quietly changed. The dish disappeared — and slowly, so did those moments of everyone coming together. Years later, in a small kitchen in Boston, that memory resurfaced. Recreating Ah Ma’s mee hoon kueh for a group of overseas friends became more than just cooking. It became a way to remember home, to share stories, and to recreate that feeling of belonging around a table.
That simple meal sparked something powerful. And from that moment, #SGEatWithUs was born — a community built on the belief that every home-cooked dish carries a story, and that sharing these stories can bring people closer together, one meal at a time.

That story pulled people in. It drew in co-founders who had their own disappearing family recipes. It pulled in Sandy, who remembered her mother's disappearing laksa recipe and felt the same quiet grief. It pulled in Valerie, who had lost her family's Eurasian recipes forever and wanted to make sure that never happened to others. Together, the three of them became the founding team of #SgEatWithUs.
It attracted home chefs who had never shared their dishes beyond their own kitchens. It inspired hundreds of volunteers who believed food could do what nothing else could — break down walls between strangers and build real community.
Since 2014, #SgEatWithUs has brought Singaporeans together across heartlands, cultural spaces and national celebrations. We went quiet for a decade. But the mission never left us.
We are back. And the table is set.
